Clavacillin Tablets For Dogs With Or Without Food

A person asked me the question, "Does Clavacillin need to be given with food?". So, today I decided to provide all sufficient information about the administration of oral antibiotic drugs i.e, Clavacillin film-coated tablets by Dechra Pharmaceuticals.

These film-coated antibiotic tablets should be administered orally with water. It contains amoxicillin trihydrate and clavulanic acid (clavulanate potassium), an antibiotic preparation with a beta-lactamase inhibitor (clavulanate potassium).

Why Clavacillin should be taken with a meal?

According to a study, taking antibiotics like penicillin with food may decrease their absorption in a stomach. It does not mean that all medicines should be taken with an empty stomach. But in the case of Clavacillin (by Dechra Pharmaceuticals) which contains amoxicillin trihydrate and treats bacterial infections of the skin, urinary tract, ear infection, nose infection, eye infection, wounds, abscesses, and other soft tissue infections of the canine and feline, Veterinarians suggest taking Clavacillin tablet on a full stomach.

There is no effect in the absorption of amoxicillin trihydrate when taken with a meal or an empty stomach. Therefore, it is advisable to take Clavacillin film-coated tablets with food. This is because amoxicillin trihydrate may cause some side effects when taking on an empty stomach. It may cause abdominal problems for your pet like abdominal pain, diarrhea, upset stomach, gas, and others that are listed below.

What If a DOG takes Clavacillin on an Empty Stomach?

Not for all pets, but in some cases, it may give some unwanted consequences (when taken on an empty stomach). Taking amoxicillin trihydrate and clavulanic acid film-coated tablets without a meal or an empty stomach may cause diarrhea in dogs. It may also cause the following side effects;

  • Upset stomach
  • Gas
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Fever (in rare cases)
  • Change in a dog's behavior

Clavamox is another brand name for amoxicillin trihydrate and clavulanic acid composition. Clavamox is the Zoetis pharmaceutical product. However, both Clavacillin and Clavamox contains the same ingredients to kill bacteria in the dog's body. Both are FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved drugs to treat infectious diseases in dogs, cats, wolf, lions, wolf, etc.
