Can You Crush Simplicef For Dogs? - Antibiotics For Dogs

Simplicef tablets are used to treat a broad range of bacterial infections caused by bacteria in canine, feline, and other animal species. This is an FDA (Food and drug administration) approved antibiotic drug which is used against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It kills bacteria by stopping the process of bacterial cell wall synthesis.

It contains an active ingredient "Cefpodoxime proxetil", a third-generation cephalosporin (a class of antibiotic drugs). Cephalosporins like cefixime, cefprozil, cefuroxime, cefepime, etc are some famous examples of broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Simplicef, the trademark of Zoetis pharmaceutical, comes in film-coated (sugar-coated) tablets form. It's recommended dosage for canine is between 2.3mg per pound to 4.5mg per pound or 5mg per kg to 10mg per one kilogram.

It's not available in liquid suspension form. Simplicef sugar-coated (polymer-based coat) tablets are available in 100mg and 200mg strengths.  Therefore, sometimes it becomes hard to give the exact prescribed dose without cutting or crushing the simplicef (cefpodoxime proxetil) film-coated tablets

Can Simplicef Be Crushed?

Yes. Simplicef film-coated or sugar-coated tablets can be crushed. Sometimes it becomes necessary to crush or cut a tablet to provide the ideal dose for a patient. A film-coated tablet can be crushed but after crushing its taste would be unpleasant or bitter.

A film-coat is a thin 20-100micro-meter layer. The layer provides a barrier between the medicine (which can be bitter in taste) and the body. It helps to avoid the unpleasant taste of medicine.

However, you should never crush or cut a modified release, extended-release, enteric-coated tablet. Because the purpose of this coating is different. For example, a modified or extended-release tablet is designed to release slowly in the stomach. If you crush or cut a modified release or extended-release tablet, then the purpose will destroy.

An enteric-coated tablet is designed to protect the tablet from stomach acid which can decrease its absorption and efficacy.

Simplicef tablets are film-coated. They can be crushed. But after crushing, it provides an unpleasant and bitter taste. But there is no effect on the efficacy, absorption, and the stability of the drug.

Why Are Simplicef Film-Coated Tablets Crushed?

Simplicef contains "Cefpodoxime proxetil", an antibiotic formulation to treat infectious diseases in dogs, cats, and other small animals. It's a highly recommended medicine by the veterinarians for all soft tissue infections like urinary tract infections, bladder, infection, kidneys infection, nose bacterial infection, ear infection, eye infection, all types of skin infections (including folliculitis, cellulitis, pyoderma), gums infection and other not described here.

These film-coated are provided in 100mg and 200mg powers. A suggested dose for a pet is 2.3 to 4.5 milligrams per one pound. Sometimes it becomes essential to cut and crush them, so you can provide the ideal dose.
