Does CLAVAMOX Have To Be Taken With FOOD

Every dog owner remains conscious about his pet's health and always tries to do the best for his best friend. Veterinarians prescribe antibiotic drugs for canines that help them to fight against bacteria in their body. Today, in the following article I decided to answer a very familiar question related to the Clavamox chewable tablets or Liquid suspension, i.e. Does Clavamox have to be taken with Food or Not?. But before I answer the question, you must be aware of this FDA (food and drug administration) approved veterinary medicine.

Clavamox is a trademark of Zoetis pharma, a subsidiary of Pfizer Laboratories. It contains "amoxicillin trihydrate and clavulanate potassium" a penicillin-type antibiotic chemical compound.

Amoxicillin trihydrate is an anti-bacterial drug that kills bacterial cells by disrupting the bacterial cell walls.  It prevents bacterial over-population and inhibits the process of their replication.

While clavulanic acid or clavulanate potassium acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor. The resistant bacteria that secrets beta-lactamase enzymes can prevent amoxicillin and other penicillin-type antibiotics from working.

So, a combination of penicillin-type antibiotic (amoxicillin) and a beta-lactam drug (clavulanate potassium) efficiently treat infectious diseases caused by the bacteria (including resistant bacteria that secret beta-lactamase enzymes).

Benefits of Giving Antibiotics To The Dogs With Food

Clavamox is a veterinary medicine that is specially formulated to treat a broad range of bacterial infections in dogs (canines), cats (felines), all other small animals, and pets.

It's available in chewable tablet form, presented in four different strengths, i.e. 62.5mg, 125mg, 250mg, and 375mg, respectively.

Liquid 15ml drops (suspension) is available for puppies that after reconstitution provides 62.5mg in every one milliliter.

A dog should take Clavamox antibiotic drug on a full stomach and must avoid taking any anti-bacterial drug on an empty stomach.

So, below are some benefits of taking antibiotics after the meal.
  • Taking antibiotics with foods can help to prevent stomach issues in canines.
  • It can better absorb by the body.
  • Clavamox on a full stomach reduces the risk of vomiting and nausea.
  • It helps to prevent GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • Clavamox after a meal can reduce the risk of diarrhea in dogs

Bad Effects Of Clavamox When Taking On An Empty Stomach

Dog medications can easily upset their stomach when are taken on an empty stomach. Below are some recorded bad effects;
  • Bloating
  • Acidity
  • Stomach spasms
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Ulcers in the digestive tract
  • GERD (Gastro-esophageal reflux disease)
  • Vomiting
  •  Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Bad taste, etc
All these side effects relate to the stomach.

Antibiotics are prescription drugs and are not available online or offline without a solid veterinarian/doctor prescription. This is because the unnecessary use of antibiotics can cause antibiotic resistance in consumers.

Always consult your dog's healthcare provider before taking any kind of medication for your pet.

Although, it doesn't affect the efficacy of amoxicillin trihydrate when it has taken with food or not. But, it's advisable that Clavamox medicine should always be taken with food as it helps to avoid stomach problems in canines, felines, and other animals.
