4 Reasons A Dog Should Drink Ample Water When Taking Clavamox

There is no doubt, a sick (infected by viruses, bacteria, or fungi) dog needs to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. It's crucial for canines to drink enough fluids when taking Clavamox (amoxicillin and clavulanic acid compound, a penicillin-type antibiotic with beta-lactamase inhibiting agent).

Clavamox (Antibiotic) For Bacterial Infections Of Canines

In this article, I decided to show up some benefits of drinking enough water while taking medication (especially an antibiotic treatment i.e, Clavamox chewable tablets, or liquid 15ml drops as a suspension).

Importance Of Hydration When Taking Clavamox

It's not about drinking a lot of water, this is all about drinking enough fluids to avoid dehydration for a canine when consuming Clavamox (amoxicillin trihydrate_clavulanate potassium).

A dog's body indicates a bacterial disease by showing up some signs or symptoms. Common indicators of a bacterial infection include Fever that may cause de-hydration if a canine doesn't drink enough water.

Antibiotics like cephalexin, cefpodoxime, amoxicillin (as trihydrate), doxycycline, etc help a living organism to get rid of a bacterial (germs) infection.

Some strong anti-bacterial drugs (antibiotics) are strongly suggested to be taken with water and after (or with) a meal.

This is because, antibiotics can upset a dog's (living organism) stomach and may also cause ulcers in different parts of the digestive system i.e. oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, etc.

A dog needs antibiotic treatment if he has developed a bacterial infection (disease) like kennel cough, pneumonia, etc.

Canines (who has a weak immune system/young dogs/puppies/and old dogs) always remain at high risk of developing an infection because of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Viruses and fungi cause to develop a secondary bacterial infection in canines.

Bacteria are occupied (present) everywhere. They are occupied inside and outside (in the environment) of a dog's body.

Good Bacteria or Commensals Bacteria

Those found inside a dog's body i.e. oral cavity, digestive system, urinary tract, etc are usually don't harm canines and being suppressed by the body's immune system (a natural shield, protection system that secures a living body by producing antibodies (a chemical substance that fights against pathogens, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other harmful agents). They don't harm a dog's body but if a dog's body immune system gets suppressed then their over-population/over-replication may develop a bacterial disease.

How a Dog Develop a Bacterial Infection?

If a dog's immune system gets compromised due to any reason i.e. a weakness, poor diet which contains not enough nutrients), age factor (puppies and old age dogs have a weak immune system comparing to young ones), or an external microbial (bacteria) which may enter a dogs body through contaminated food, soil, water, toys, and even through contaminated air.

4 Reasons A Dog Should Drink Enough Water When Taking Antibiotics (Clavamox or others)

So, here in this section, I would share five reasons in detail that will help you to understand "Why Is it necessary to drink more water when taking medication".

Maintain P.H Levels in Stomach

The water p.h is "7", which shows that it's neutral (as it's not acidic <7 or alkaline >7). Antibiotics may disturb p.h levels of the stomach as the stomach starts producing more acids because of compromised gut flora (antibiotics also kill commensals bacteria).

Drinking enough water (alkaline water:p.h levels ranges from 8-9) helps dogs to maintain a good p.h level as water neutralizes the stomach acidic level.

Acidic stomach in dogs may cause other complications like GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease), dry mouth, mouth ulcers, stomach ulcers, etc.

Absorption

Clavamox (antibiotic drug) needs water to get absorbs into the body. Make sure that a dog is fully hydrated before giving medicine. Veterinarians suggest taking Clavamox after a meal.

De-hydration

Fever, loose motions (diarrhea), vomiting, nausea, and upset stomach may cause a big water loss and a dog may become dehydrated very soon. Dehydration is fatal for canines because it may kill them within minutes.

Although, antibiotics have a little contribution of causing de-hydration in canines by disturbing the healthy gut flora that may cause diarrhea, vomiting, and upset stomach.

Dry Mouth

Drinking enough water while taking antibiotic treatment helps a dog to prevent dry mouth.

Different kinds of bacteria cause various types of infectious diseases but a few symptoms may be common. A dog's body responds (by showing symptoms) such as pain, fever, diarrhea, sore throat, etc.

Antibiotics like Clavamox (amoxicillin_clavulanic acid) kills bacteria by disrupting their cell walls and help to get rid of bacterial infection. But in another scenario, antibiotics can also kill the good bacteria (commensals bacteria) that help to maintain a healthy gut flora for the body.
