Fortunately, the drug is available both in an oral and intravenous form. Its oral form allows it to reach high drug concentrations in most tissues and areas of the body.

However, low doses of the drug are appropriate for animals with decreased kidney function or osteoarthritis. It also is effective in treating GI upsets, but it may not be right for all dogs.

Does Doxycycline Causes Depression in Dogs?

In a separate study, researchers examined the effects of doxycycline on PTSD (Post-traumatic stress syndrome) in U.S. military members.

While the study's authors did not specify the exact dosage of doxycycline administered to service members, the researchers noted that the treatment was associated with increased incidents of PTSD.

Among doxycycline users, the researchers noted an increased risk of major depression and suicidal thinking. Among non-doxycycline users, no change was noted.

There is no research performed on dogs that can confirm the neurological side effects caused by doxycycline.

You must check and observe the behavior of your pet if it's taking this antibiotic medication. Consult a veterinarian if you observe any behavior changes while giving doxycycline medicine to your pet.
