In the following article, I answered the most asked question from the dog owners, How long does it take for cefpodoxime to work in dogs? Bacterial infections are so common in dogs. A canine may easily get a moderate to severe bacterial infection due to poor hygiene, contaminated water, contaminated food, urine, insect bite, etc. Also, there are some other commensals bacteria’s that live in a dog’s body, in the digestive system, mouth, urinary tract, without causing any harm.

Commensals bacteria live in a dog’s body and help in various metabolic processes. They remain suppressed by the immune system, a little change in the immune system may cause their (commensals bacteria) over-growth, and their over-population leads to a bacterial infection.

Broad-spectrum antibiotics are used to treat these kinds of bacterial infections that may affect all parts of the body, including throat, skin diseases, genital area, eyes, nose, ears, or any internal organ i.e, liver, stomach, bladder, etc.

Simplicef (cefpodoxime proxetil) tablets, Rilexine (cephalexin), Clavamox (amoxicillin trihydrate and clavulanate potassium), Albon (Sulfadimethoxine), Zeniquin (Marbofloxacin), Baytril (enrofloxacin) are some commonly used antibiotic brands that are FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved veterinary antibacterial compositions to treat a broad variety of gram-positive and gram-negative kinds of bacteria. Other antibiotics include penicillin, ampicillin, metronidazole, tobramycin, tylosin tartrate, fusidic acid, etc.

But today I want to explain, How Simplicef (cefpodoxime proxetil) works against bacterial over-growth?. Simplicef is an FDA approved antibiotic drug which is used to treat all types of bacterial infections of skin, throat, gums, urinary tract including bladder infection, folliculitis, cellulitis, pyoderma, periodontal disease in dogs, etc. It’s a prescription drug that is only available on a registered veterinarian prescription only. You need a valid prescription to buy it.

Cefpodoxime proxetil starts working within one hour after the oral administration. A veterinarian may suggest the exact dosage plan for your dog. Although, it is recommended to take a minimum of 2.3mg cefpodoxime proxetil per one Pound (lb) to 4.5mg cefpodoxime proxetil per one pound maximum. It starts showing results in two to three days of oral administration. It’s not suitable for the antimicrobial treatment for more than thirty days.

Cefpodoxime proxetil belongs to the cephalosporins group of antibiotics. Cephalosporins like cefixime, cefuroxime, cefepime, etc kill bacterial by inhibiting the growth of bacterial cell wall synthesis. They inhibit the replication or duplication of bacteria by stopping the process of bacterial cell wall synthesis which leads to bacterial cell death.

All antibiotic drugs are specially formulated to treat bacterial infections. They don’t work against viruses, parasites, protozoans, and insects. Although antibacterial drugs are used to treat secondary bacterial infections usually occurs due to a viral infection, a parasitic infection or insect bite may transfer the respected bacteria.

A healthy body hygiene, clean and nutritious diet, helps to a strong immune system. Always try to avoid the unnecessary use of antibiotics and steroid drugs unless recommended by the veterinarian. Because unnecessary or more often usage of antibacterial drugs may cause antibiotics-resistance in pets.
